Sheringham & the area

Sheringham hosts many events all year round including the famous Crab & Lobster Festival, the Viking festival, Sheringham Carnival and the hugely popular 1940’s weekend in mid September. There is also a Steam Gala in the autumn, celebrating the heritage North Norfolk Railway that runs from Sheringham to Holt, through Kelling, with fantastic sea views along the way.

Nearby is the National Trust’s Sheringham Park, with miles of hilly countryside covered with gorse and purple heather and offers fantastic sea views. Great views are also found at the top of Beeston Bump, a large grassy hill that is 103m tall and was formed at the end of the ice age.

A little further afield there’s lot to do and explore. Idyllic coastal villages, stunning beaches and magnificent historic country homes are all within easy driving distance. If you want to leave the car behind Sheringham has excellent transport links – the mainline train service to Norwich via Cromer and bus services can be accessed just a 2-minute walk from Alton House.


2022 Events


North Nofolk Railway Spring Steam Gala (1st -3rd April). Five or more locomotives in steam operating an intensive service – including a special guest engine

Viking Festival (9th April).   Battle re-enactments, torchlight parade and boat burning on the beach.


Crab and Lobster Festival (15th - 16th May).  Celebrating the sea-faring heritage of the seaside towns of Sheringham and Cromer - street performers, live music, heritage and seafaring crafts

Sheringham Park (May to Early June).  Sheringham Park has a nationally important collection of rhododendrons.  During May into early June the display comes to its peak when visitors can stroll down the main drive through the wild garden flanked on either side by flowering plants


The Queen's Platinum Jubilee (3rd - 6th June).  Including street Party on Sunday 5th June

Norfolk Railway Mixed Traction Weekend (10th -12th June). Six or more steam and diesel locomotives in action plus heritage diesel multiple units to operate an intensive service

North Norfolk Railway Beer and Cider Festival (24th - 26th June).  Steam and heritage diesel trains plus traditional ales, ciders and more – many produced locally!


Vintage Transport Weekend (2nd - 3rd July). Historic road vehicles descend on the railway to create a colourful spectacle alongside the steam trains

Potty  Morris and Folk Festival (2nd - 3rd July).  Sheringham plays host to morris, clog and folk dance sides from as far afield as Lincolnshire, Nottingham and the Channel Islands for its long-running annual dance fest.

Cromer Pier Show (2nd July - 1st October)The only full season end of pier variety show in the world!  There is lots of glitz and glamour from the Cromer Pier dancers and you will witness some of the best production values outside of London’s West End along with a variety of fun, laughter, spectacle, song and dance.


Sheringham Carnival week (1st - 7th August).  All the usual favourites will return, such as Battle of the Bands, the Street Races, the Sandcastle Competition, Beach Sports, the Duck Race, talent show, and much more!

North Norfolk Railway Bank Holiday Steam Gala (27th - 29th August). Up to six locomotives in steam operating an intensive service


Sheringham 1940's weekend (17th -18th September).  Step back in time to the days of the blitz, rationing and utility clothing.  Come in uniform or 1940s civilian dress to add to the atmosphere. Don't forget your gas mask and ration books!


Sheringham Christmas Lights 'switch on' (27th November). 

Thursford Christmas Spectacular (8th Nov - 23rd December). An extravaganza of non-stop singing, dancing, music, humour and variety. It’s a fast moving celebration of the festive season featuring an eclectic mix of both seasonal and year round favourites. With a cast of 130 this is the biggest Christmas show of it’s kind in Europe! Norfolk Lights Express (11th November - 2nd January). Arrive after dark at Sheringham Station and you’ll be greeted by the magical sight of a steam-hauled train illuminated by thousands of tiny lightsDeparting from Sheringham you will steal your way to of the Holt. Along the way, you’ll see beautiful lineside displays that tell a tale, and the on-train lighting will shine on to the stunning North Norfolk countryside – making it look like you’ve never seen it before!

Cromer Pier Christmas Show (27th November - 30th December). The only full season end of pier variety show in the world! Holkham Hall by Candlelight (December dates tbc).  This is a truly magical opportunity to relish the magnificent state rooms adorned with opulent Christmas decorations and beautiful flickering candlelight

Garden of Lights at Blickling (December dates tbc). Enjoy the colours, smells and sounds of Christmas at Blickling. Begin your visit through the magically lit walled garden, before discovering the garden of lights and lit acorns on the Parterre. Warm up with mulled wine and a mince pie as you soak up the magical atmosphere at night.
